Table tennis rules

Start the game

There are many general laws that govern the sport of table tennis, and among these laws are the following:

  • The lot is used to determine the player who starts serving the ball, and to determine the player's position on the game table.
  • If the player who won the toss chooses to start the serve or start from a specific side of the table, his opponent is free to choose the other option.
  • At the end of each round of a table tennis match, the person who made the first serve in the previous game is replaced to become a receiver, and vice versa.

Transmit and receive

The correct serve of the table tennis player begins with placing the ball stable on the palm of the hand through which the racket is not held, then dropping the ball vertically near the player’s head and from a height of no less than 16 cm before hitting it, then the ball is hit by the racket when it descends from this height ; This is so that the ball touches the area designated for the player on the table and then rushes over the net to the area designated for the opponent player, without touching the net separating the two areas, and the player who performs the transmission must take into account that this process takes place from behind the end line of his court. Some cases that require re-sending the ball again, and these cases are as follows:

  • In the event that the ball touches any part of the table net, which obstructs the other player’s reception of it.
  • In the event that the ball is sent and the other player is not prepared and ready to receive it.
  • In the event of any matter beyond the control of the players that impedes the process of sending or receiving the ball by one of the players.

The referee is responsible for monitoring the correct implementation of the serve in the table tennis game, and if it is executed incorrectly for the first time, the referee can warn the player without counting a mistake, and some conditions for the correct serve may be overlooked for those people who may be prevented by a physical disability from doing it In the required and correct manner, and on the other side, the opposing player must hit the ball again and return it again to the player who sent it, taking into account that the ball bounces in the half of the table designated for the opponent, and without touching the ball to the middle net.

Points Calculation

  • The referee awards a point to the opposing team player when one of the following errors occurs:
  • The player fails to serve the ball correctly.
  • The player is unable to receive the ball and return it correctly.
  • The player's contact with the table surface through his free hand during the playing period.
  • Causing a player to move the surface of the court through his body or through any object he wears or even carries during a period of play.
  • Touching the table net or one of its two legs by the player or through his racket or anything he carries.
  • The player touches the ball while throwing it, or touches it to anything he is holding or next to, after it has touched the surface of the court from his side.
  • Playing the ball by the player and responding to it before it touches the surface of the court on his part.
  • Touching the ball twice on purpose when hitting the ball.
